چکیده

Nutrient uptake length is an important parameter for quantifying nutrient cycling in streams. Although nutrient tracer additions are the preferred method for measuring uptake length under ambient nutrient concentrations, short-term nutrient addition experiments have more frequently been used to estimate uptake length in streams. Theoretical analysis of the relationship between uptake length determined by nutrient addition experiments (SW9) and uptake length determined by tracer additions (SW) predicted that SW9 should be consistently longer than SW, and that the overestimate of uptake length by SW9 should be related to the level of nutrient addition above ambient concentrations and the degree of nutrient limitation. To test these predictions, we used data from an interbiome study of NH4 uptake length in which NH4 tracer and short-term NH4 addition experiments were performed in 10 streams using a uniform experimental approach. The experimental results largely confirmed the theoretical predictions: SW9 was consistently longer than SW and SW9:SW ratios were directly related to the level of NH4 addition and to indicators of N limitation. The experimentally derived SW9: SW ratios were used with the theoretical results to infer the N limitation status of each stream. Together, the theoretical and experimental results showed that tracer experiments should be used whenever possible to determine nutrient uptake length in streams. Nutrient addition experiments may be useful for comparing uptake lengths between different streams or different times in the same stream, however, provided that nutrient additions are kept as low as possible and of similar magnitude.

Pre- and post-flood retention efficiency of nitrogen in a Sonoran Desert stream

The objectives of this study were 1) to compare Sonoran Desert streams with other streams in terms of retention efficiency of nitrate; 2) to examine the effects of a flood on nitrate retention and to determine which factors control nitrate retention in the surface stream subsystem in Sycamore Creek, Arizona; and 3) to compare the short-term nutrient addition technique with computations based up...

Regulation of nutrient uptake in eutrophic lowland streams

We studied nutrient uptake in relation to water chemistry, stream hydrodynamics, and ecosystem metabolism in two eutrophic lowland streams located near Berlin, Germany. Ambient nutrient uptake rates ranged from 0.180 to 12.880 g NO3-N m22 d21, from 0.035 to 0.517 g NH4-N m22 d21, and from 0.017 to 0.750 g PO4-P m22 d21. Temporal and spatial variability in nutrient uptake rates within single str...

Relating nutrient uptake with transient storage in forested mountain streams

Streams control the timing and delivery of fluvial nutrient export from watersheds, and hydraulic processes such as transient storage may affect nutrient uptake and transformation. Although we expect that hydraulic processes that retain water will increase nutrient uptake, the relationship between transient storage and nutrient uptake is not clear. To examine this relationship, we injected a co...

Ecosystem metabolism controls nitrogen uptake in streams in Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming

Streams and rivers regulate nitrogen transport (N) to downstream ecosystems. Rates of N uptake can be high in streams, but controls on the variation in uptake rates of N among streams are not known. We measured ammonium (NH ) and nitrate (NO ) uptake velocities (Vf) and compared these with whole-reach estimates of gross primary 1 2 4 3 production (GPP) and community respiration (CR) in 11 low-n...

Biosorption of styrene from synthetic wastewater by sugar cane waste(Bagass)

In this work, styrene removal from wastewater by using sugarcane waste (bagasse) as an adsorbent was studied. Equilibrium isotherms and kinetics were determined; the effects of bagasse particle size and concentration, solutions pH, and temperature on the biosorption of styrene were studied in batch experiments. Adsorption equilibrium data was successfully fitted to Langmuir isotherms (R2=0.986)...
